Lights Out (2016)

This would definitely not be for me, but it might be for others as the rating is quite good for a horror movie. It’s now playing in theaters and a DVD release date is estimated for October 2016.

Lights Out (2016)

As a little girl, Rebecca was haunted by unusual and freaky events every time the lights went out. After growing up, she began to dismiss these occurrences as a simple childhood fear, but Rebecca is forced to confront her fears when her younger brother, Martin, starts experiencing the same issues. Though the creature only appears when it is completely dark, it still manages to do damage in these short periods of time. For some reason, a malignant supernatural being is linked to her family, and it will continue to torment them unless Rebecca can figure out a way to stop it.

Genre – Horror
Starring – Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Maria Bello
Director – David F. Sandberg
Writers – Eric Heisserer (screenplay), David F. Sandberg (based on the short film by)

I'm not hoping for much, but for some reason, I'm actually considering this one. I usually avoid supernatural films.

It's not that I dislike supernatural/possession type films, I was always a fan in fact films like The Exorcist and The Omen have set a very high bar IMO for those types of films.

The problem I have is after all these years they have run out of new ideas and watching those types of films has become a little too predictable to really be fun anymore.

So it's not that I dislike them as a genre I just find them repetitive, kind of like the the slasher flicks of the 70-80's, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, they were all cool for a while, then the ideas were exhausted, I mean there are only so many ways you can spill blood and decapitate victims, so after a while it becomes just a re-hash of what has been done and for me no matter how well that is done it's still boring.

I think Final Destination (2000) found a very creative new path and for five films in eleven years now, they have done rather well at finding slick ways to shed blood and blend it with a supernatural story line, IMO it's the best new thing that has happened in the whole genre for years.

I agree entirely, CT. Final Destination did revive the genre, though I never really saw it as 'supernatural' in the sense that there are no specific demons or ghosts involved. It's more 'metaphysical' than supernatural, to me. I did like them. I also kinda enjoyed the Urban Legend films.

Well since we have to discuss semantics too...

Full Definition of supernatural

1 : of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially : of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil

2 a : departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature
b : attributed to an invisible agent (as a ghost or spirit)

I think given that "Death" was as a "unseen force" acting on the "real world" to change the course of events, that qualifies as supernatural.

I also liked all the Final Destination movies. Obviously, the first one was the best as I wasn't expecting it to be this good, it kind of suprised me how it all went down!
