Dr. Louise Banks is a remarkably talented linguist who has spent most of her life discovering how languages work. She is the ideal candidate, then, for the monumental task of trying to communicate with the alien civilization whose ships have landed on Earth. No one knows what these visitors intend, but tensions run high, and Louise is desperate to learn why these aliens have come as soon as possible. She is willing to risk her life for the possibility of a peaceful solution to this unprecedented event, but is it a gamble that will pay off in the end?
