High-Rise (2015)

Postby Fogdude » Sun Jul 10, 2016 12:00 am

"Spoiler alert: this is the opening sentence of the 1975 J.G. Ballard novel upon which this movie is based: “Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr. Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.” The sentence is quintessential Ballard: bone-dry, repellent and also deeply hooky, simple and precise while implying depths that the reader would be perhaps be well to fear exploring." - Glenn Kenny Read Variety Review Here

Director: Ben Wheatley
Screenplay: Amy Jump,
Based on the novel by J.G. Ballard

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, Keeley Hawes

This movie looks a bit weird, but James Purefoy & Tom Hiddleston are in it, so I will most certainly watch it! :D

It's definitely an odd one & I doubt I'll try it out. Not even sure why I posted it or where I even saw it that caught my attention.

If you don't like ArtHaus films then you would be advised to skip this one, it will not appeal to the average movie watcher, fair warning given, my work is done here.

Wait, I'm afraid your job is not done here yet lol, you need to explain what is considered an ArtHaus film. Would "The Fountain" or "Enemy" be considered this type of movies? You know, the kind that you force yourself to watch until the very end and then you bang your head on the wall and say "why the heck did I not quit watching this after 12 minutes" type of movie? lol

oO(I think that Google bot is following me :Scared :LOL)

Art House (Definition)

Art house is a film genre which encompasses films where the content and style – often artistic or experimental – adhere with as little compromise as possible to the filmmakers’ personal artistic vision. The narrative is often in the social realism style with a focus on the characters’ contemplation of their existence or immediate concerns.

An art house film is typically independently-produced, outside of the major film studio system. Major studios are reluctant to pour money into projects which are unlikely to return a profit due to the limited – often niche market – appeal of the material. Without major studio backing, art house filmmakers rarely acquire the finances for large productions nor strongly-marketed releases.

Art house filmmakers commonly use a mix of lesser-known and amateur actors, modest production sets – typically using real-world locations – and no large stunts or special effects. The filmmakers may explore and develop new film-making conventions in their quest to realize their visions effectively on a limited budget.

An art house is a cinema which runs art house films.

Film festivals usually include a good proportion of art house films.

Art house (genre) is also known as arthouse, art house cinema and art cinema.

Art house film (film) is also known as art film, art movie and specialty film.

art house (cinema) is also know as repertory cinema, arthouse cinema and specialty theater.

A few examples of arthouse cinema would be:

Under The Skin (2013)

Enemy (2013)

Cloud Atlas (2012)

Mulholland Dr. (2001)

That's just a few quick examples off the top of my head, the whole concept of Art House films is pretty broad but most associate the term or reference with "Artsy" often hard to understand "symbolism" type films that don't rely on "action or dialog" to convey the "meaning" the director is sending from behind the pictures -- that they leave to the viewer.

Which is why many don't like them as they watch films for pure entertainment and most do not like to have to "think" and "decipher" what does this "visual" mean or represent during the whole film, they just want to be told or for it to be very obvious.

I generally avoid ArtHouse films like the plague, but I did see Under The Skin & it wasn't all that bad. I hated Cloud Atlas completely.

Perfect, that's pretty much what I thought, reason why I hated "Enemy" being THE worst movie I've ever seen and right after that one was the "The Fountain" and I think I'll throw in the mix "Black Swan". I haven't seen the others that you mentioned, but I'm sure to stay away now. I am exactly how you described why people watch movies... "they watch films for pure entertainment... etc..."

Like Fog, I also avoid these type of films like the plague, although sometimes I get caught watching them due to lack of info. So now that it's clear, I will avoid "High-Rise" for sure! Thanks CT, you just saved me lots of time I can use to see something else to my liking!

Your welcome, I generally try to tag those as such because I know many try to avoid them.
